The Education Catering Team sit within the Estates Management & Contracts, CYP service and consist of: Janet Smith (Senior Contract Officer/Catering Manager), Kirsty Salmon - Contract Officer (Catering) and Tracey Britton - Contract Officer, Facility Management (FM).
The team’s primary role is to manage the centrally managed schools meals service on behalf of 66 schools through ensuring contractual compliance of a number of contracts with an annual value of excess of £10 million.
The school meals contract is the council’s largest contract, worth £8.6 m per annum and serves around 2.5 million meals per a school year. The contract is currently operated by Chartwells (part of the Compass Group) and employs around 500 staff.
The most important outcome of the Catering team role is to ensure all Lewisham schools comply with their statutory duty to provide school meals within the central contract and all pupils receive a nutritious and tasty meals in accordance with the Governments School Food Plan.
The Facility Management contract ensures that the kitchens run efficiently, covering day to day repairs and statutory maintenance for kitchen equipment. Further to the maintenance contract the team manage a capital programme utilising a number of contractors, delivering between £500,000 - £1 million of works each year.
Janet is very passionate about school meals and has worked for Lewisham for 28 years! She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. She uses her expertise to help in our schools building programme – particularly in kitchen design. Janet works closely with Chartwells Management team and our schools Headteachers encouraging close working relations to drive levels of satisfaction and take up of school meals. Janet moonlights for the other side (Bromley Council) as a Superintendent Registrar, conducting wedding ceremonies at the weekend!
Kirsty who previously worked for Croydon Council for many years as a Monitoring Officer also carried out school meal related consultancy services prior to joining the team in 2016. The task of quality management /control within School kitchens falls to Kirsty, through the process of contract compliance/monitoring. Kirsty loves making and eating delicious cakes!
Tracey worked for Westminster Council for 27 years and is the newest recruit in the team. She joined in October 2016 and has proven to be an asset, by keeping right on top of the schools maintenance requirements, by working closely with Chartwells staff, the Schools and our Contractors, Tracey helps to ensure schools have a fully working kitchen. As a vegan she eats lots of interesting food and gives a different twist on food!
